36th Annual River to Sea Bike Ride & Expo: FAQ

How do I register for the ride?

Online preregistration is has reached its cap, so it is now closed. Day-of registration is available for $5, exact change, cash only. Just head to the same-day registration table during ride check-in to sign the waiver and drop off $5.

What’s the route?

What’s the pace?

This is a 20 mile round-trip bike ride, and participants need to be able to maintain a speed of 10mph for the duration of the ride.

Will roads be closed to traffic?

No, roads will remain open during the ride, but temporary holds at intersections will be managed by law enforcement at to allow cyclists to pass safely. This means drive times may be briefly impacted during the ride.

When’s check-in?

Check-in will be along Princess Street (enter from Second St.) from 6:15-6:50 a.m. View a map of the downtown check-in set up.

If I preregistered, do I need to check in?

Yes please, so we have an accurate head count for future ride planning purposes, and a log of who is here for safety purposes.

Where do I park?

Participants may park in any available deck in downtown Wilmington. Nonmetered parking is available east of 3rd Street.

How is the ride supported?

Law enforcement will escort the ride, leading and following cyclists to help manage traffic and ensure safety. WMPO staff will also provide SAG assistance along the route. A scheduled 15 to 20-minute rest stop at Wrightsville Beach Park will offer access to restrooms, complementary snacks, and water.

What’s new at the Wrightsville Beach Park turnaround point?

We are asking for cyclists to gather on the softball field this year, to keep the parking lot generally clear. There will be signs directing cyclists. View a map of the Wrightsville Beach Park setup.

What if there’s inclement weather?

The WMPO will be monitoring the weather closely leading up to the ride and will make a decision in the interest of safety with notice to participants via email and on social media (@WilmingtonMPO and @GoCoastNC on Facebook and Instagram). This ride does not have a scheduled rain date.

Where do I park at Empie?

You can park in any unreserved space at Empie Park. The event is under shelters 1 and 2. Signs will direct you to the Expo area.

Who’s invited to the Expo?

Anyone can come, regardless of if they will participate in the Ride! It’s free, open to all, and family friendly!

Will merchandise be available for purchase?

Yes! Exclusive ride merchandise will be available for purchase. Both cash and card are accepted.
